No April Fools here!  We are on the countdown to our National Scrapbook Day Extravaganza!  We are so excited to be back in the saddle again.  Just 29 days and counting.  Just time enough to put those gift bags together, get our class kits done, and gather all our prizes!  We are going to have some fun!!!!

It’s not too late to sign up and join us for our very own national holiday!  We have spots available at the Shilo crop that will include food, gift bags, make n takes, and don’t forget about the prizes!  The cost is $150 for the entire weekend!  We will begin Friday, April 30^th at 6:00 p.m. and finish at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 2^nd. We also have room in our modified crop that will be held at the store location the same weekend.  The cost is $75 and will include gift bags, snacks and prizes!  We will crop from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30^th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1^st, and 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2^nd.

For those of you who have paid your deposit, the balance is now due for the crop.  I will be in the store Friday morning and can also be here by appointment.  You can also email me your credit card information or just give it to me over the phone! It’s all good, my friends!

We will be posting our class schedule for that weekend next week.  The girls are busy putting the examples together and should have the schedule available on our website next week.  We have classes featuring Teresa Collins, Bo Bunny, and more!

So, we are moving forward with the crops!  We have posted the information on our website and have opened up our phone lines and email for registration for our first crop Friday, February 26^th from 5:00 p.m. through Sunday, February 28^th at 5:00 p.m.!  We are trying to keep costs down and still offer a lot of fun activity that we hope will entice you to come crop with us!  Here’s what you can expect at this crop:

Round the clock cropping from 5:00 p.m. Friday until 5:00 p.m. Sunday

We are also working on getting donations of coupons and products from local businesses to put in your gift bags.  I don’t have the exact value yet but we are well over $1000 in prizes so far!  Final prize value will be determined upon the number of croppers!

The cost for the crop in February is $125.00 for the whole weekend.  I have, however, also received a number of requests to crop for just part of the weekend for a reduced fee!  And flexible is our middle name!  So, if you can’t crop all weekend, here’s what we can offer:

Friday night = $25

Saturday All Day = $50

Sunday day = $25

Each of the above will include a Make N Take but no gift bag.

Gift bags will be available for purchase as well to all croppers.  Whether cropping all weekend or just for a day or two, you will be able to sign up for classes offered during the weekend!  All classes will be available for an additional fee, and a discount will apply if you sign up for two or more classes.  We will post the class descriptions on our website and on FaceBook as the kits become available!

Ok, so here is the scoop on the next crops we have planned.  We are hosting a true no-host crop March 26-28.  You can crop from 5:00 Friday through 5:00 Sunday.  The cost is only $50 per person.  We will give away some prizes and have snacks and drinks and of course you will have access to our tools.  We will also offer classes that weekend for an additional fee.  If you can only crop for part of the weekend, here is the pricing structure:

Friday 03/26 = $10

Saturday 03/27 = $25

Sunday 03/28 = $15

Our next crop will be our National Scrapbook Day Weekend Crop Friday, April 30^th @ 6:00 p.m through Sunday, May 2^nd @ 4:00 p.m. for just $150.00.  This crop will be held at the Shilo Inn and we will offer gift bags, prizes, make n takes and much more!

We will also hold a crop in the store that same weekend with modified gift bags and prizes.  The price will be only $75 for the weekend and we can also offer daily cropping prices as necessary.  The Shilo will be offering a discount on room rates if you mention “Scrapbook Fever” when you register for a room!

Right now, our phone lines and email are open for registration for our February crop.  We will open our phone lines (and will be in the shop) for registration for our March and National Scrapbook Day Crop on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15^th beginning at 10:00 a.m.

For those registering for a February and/or March crop, you will receive a discount off the registration fee for the National Scrapbook Day Crop!!!

Katina, Lisa and I have been busy this last month trying to come up with some great ideas to make you want to crop with us…and I think we have a lot of fun stuff planned for you.  The great news…it’s later this month!

When:   Friday, February 26^th at 5:00 p.m. through Sunday, February 28^th at 5:00 p.m.

Cost:  Just $125.00, $50 non-refundable deposit to reserve your spot!

We will open up our phone lines on Monday, February 8^th at 10:00 a.m. to take reservations.  The non-refundable deposit is required at sign-up and the balance to be paid by February 20^th.  If you want to just drop in to sign-up and see us, that would be great!

The crop will be a no-host crop in that we will not be providing food (in an attempt to keep costs down) but we will have lots of drinks and snacks available.  Every cropper will receive a gift bag valued at over $50 each and we have lots of prizes to give away as well.  We will have staff available around the clock.  We will also be offering classes upstairs throughout the weekend for an additional fee.  We will post the class information as it becomes available!

If you haven’t heard by now, the rumor is true – Scrapbook Fever! has closed its retail doors forever, and we are definitely sadder for having to do so. As she herself put it, Shelly wanted to go out on top and I think she succeeded admirably in doing so.

Yes, it is true.  We are closing our retail store effective Saturday, December 26^th.  And, yes, in many ways, this has been the hardest decision in my life.  When I bought the business six years ago, Bud and I had agreed to run the scrapbook store as a business not a hobby.  And businesses need to make money to survive.

At this point, we would have to make such drastic changes to our business without any guarantee that it would change the bottom line and I am not willing to change the business to that extent.  I would rather go out on top than to watch what we have built change and become something we just cannot be proud of or take pride in managing.

And, I would like to go out with a BANG!  You know how much I LOVE giving stuff away!  So this is my last chance to have some fun, give some FABULOUS prizes away, and say Thank You all at once!  As part of our sale, we have a FANTASTIC Contest that I think you will love participating in!  So, come by, check out the prizes, sign up for the contest and have some fun with us this month!

Kits of the Week – Check out our Kits of the Week! Each kit consists of a two-page layout!!!  Come in on Tuesdays to see our newest creations or check out our Kit Corner if you have missed one or two! Just two kits of the week this month – the first comes out on Tuesday December 15^th and the second will be out on Tuesday December 22^nd.

We will allow you to phone in your seat request, just as long as you pay for your reservation at the same time!  And if you haven’t checked out our new layout in the downstairs back cropping area, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.  You spoke, we listened!  You have even more space to store your scrapbooking supplies while you crop!

Scrap-A-Holics Crops – Only two Scrap-A-Holics Friday Crops this month!!! Come in between 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. for fun and prizes. The cost is only $5!  Advanced reservations and payment are required so call soon to reserve your spot! Don’t get cropped out!!! Fridays December 11^th, and 18^th.

Famous Last Words

How do you sum up six years of your life in a few words? It’s tough, and even for me, it’s enough to bring tears to my eyes. Our business has been nothing if not for being about the people involved and our relationships with them. Over the years, staff has become family, and customers have become friends. A “mere” small business became a “happy place” not only for us but for you too.

Now we have to say good-bye to that happy place and to you too, and it’s tough to do.  To say this business decision has been one of the most difficult we have ever made would be quite an understatement indeed. I know Shelly felt like she was going to personally be letting down many people, but we truly had no choice. She wanted to go out on top, and not wait to the bitter end. She wanted her “happy place” to stay that way in both her memory and in yours, and in that I believe she succeeded greatly.

As is her style, we are going out with a bang – and hope you have as much fun with our store-ending prize giveaway contest as we had in creating it.

It seems like only a few moments ago when, with more than a little trepidation, Shelly opened the doors to the, then, Memory Shelf, for the first time. We didn’t really know what would happen, but we did know we had the strong support of our staff, and quickly, we developed relationships with many customers that are even stronger today.

We got nervous all over again when we moved and then expanded, becoming Scrapbook Fever. Nervousness gave way to excitement as the store just blossomed.

As for me, I remember clearly the first time I sat down to write the monthly newsletter from CHA in Atlanta. Each month, I would wonder and sometimes worry over what I was going to say to close each issue. When in doubt, I would share something personal, because, at the end of the day, that’s what our business has been – something personal – to us as well as to you.

It may be trite, but nonetheless true, to say that we could not have made it this far without you. It has been a great ride.

I believe what differentiates scrapbooking from other hobbies and crafts is because it is all about people and relationships. Let’s hope we all continue on in the spirit of Scrapbook Fever, in our very own happy places, and rejoice in each other’s lives and relationships. Even if it won’t be here, Shelly and I still wish you all

Seriousness aside, we have some fun planned for this weekend!  During our Super Saturday Sale, we will be hosting our own Scrap Yard of sorts…we have been cleaning up around here!  We have reviewed a number of store sample layouts and projects and they are priced to sell!  We have over 250 layouts (many are two page layouts) and home décor projects available for sale this Saturday!

We also have some extra kits available for sale and are busy putting together some grab bags as well.  The employees may even bring in some of their leftovers and have them for sale as well!  Our store will be set up on Saturday just like Scrap Yard and the same rules apply…all sales will be final on those selected items, no coupons or punch cards can be used or punched on these items.  But mark your calendars…you don’t want to miss this opportunity to get some ready-done projects!!!

We will also have many items on sale in the store on Saturday too.  Additionally, if you spend $50 or more, you can choose a free bag (we’ve selected the bags but there are many to choose from!) to put your goodies in!  We also have leftover kits from our Anniversary Sale that will be available for sale as well!!!

November. You can’t wait for it to get here and when its here, you panic because December is right around the corner! Before we worry about next month, I want to take a moment to look forward to this month. The month filled with thankfulness. I am thankful for many things. We have had a truly blessed year. We celebrated a first birthday for my granddaughter Kalli and welcomed (officially) Brayden and Marco into our family. Oh ok, they were already welcomed but it was a great wedding nonetheless.

And the pictures were awesome! We have had many comments on the wedding layouts and people wanting to know who did a great job with the pics…well, we owe a big “Thank you!” to Yuen Lui Photography for the excellent photos! You guys rock!

Seems like only yesterday that our son Nick and I were hauling tables up and down the stairs at the Shilo Inn, and now we get to do it all over again! I’m sure our Anniversary Crop means a lot more fun to you than that! Judging by the looks on the participant’s faces, I would say a lot more fun! So, we are getting ready to do it all over again! In honor of this special event of ours, we’re actually going to be open all weekend long, so even if you had to forego the crop, be sure to come in on Friday November 6th, Saturday November 7th, and even Sunday November 8th!!! We’ll be open on Sunday, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. I know the Boss is going to go all out on this sale, so this is one you definitely do not want to miss!!!

Super Saturday Sale – Will it be super? Of course! Will it be on Saturday November 14th? Yes it will. Do I have any idea what is going to be on sale? No, I have no idea at all! How will we find out? Well, one way is certain – drop in on Saturday November 14th or watch your email inbox for more details as the happy day approaches!!! Rumor has it there may be store examples for sale…I will keep my fingers crossed!

All Day Crops – Join us on Saturday November 21st and Saturday November 28th for two fun all day crops! As usual, you can expect some of your very favorite staff people to be there in addition to prizes and refreshments. A mere $15 for a fabulous day of fun and friends!!!

Happy Thanksgiving! – We’ll be closed of course on Thanksgiving Day but we will also be closing early at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday November 25th in order to give our wonderful staff some time off to get ready for their own Turkey Day celebrations! Thanks for understanding!!

Black Friday Sale – You know, I always hated the term Black Friday. Sounds kind of negative to me. Of course, you know why retailers call it that – I think it used to be associated with coming out of the red, you know, profitability. Well, maybe they should rename it to Less Red Friday. Seeing as how the economy is treating so many businesses so badly. I guess LRF doesn’t exactly have that same ring to it. Alas and alack! Anyway, despite the economy, despite the housing situation, despite everything, your favorite Scrapbook Store is going to show you one heck of a good sale on Friday November 27th!!! Disney Ariel Layout by Mary Lou – This month’s Disney class is a two page layout featuring “Ariel”. This layout is designed for two 4X6 photos, one vertical and the other horizontal. Photo Tinting with Kristi – Last but not least for a month of classes, Kristi will be teaching you the art of photo tinting. You will need to bring 3 or more black and white photos (they must be from a store, not printed from your computer!) to class for learning this technique! You will also be supplied a secret $6.00 tool to use and take home with you! Please bring a nonstick craft mat if you have one and an apron (Kristi is a messy scrapper)! Reserve your spot!!! Using Shelly’s Schematic, you now have the option to reserve your seat at any of our crops! Of course, this is on a first-come first-served basis. We will allow you to phone in your seat request, just as long as you pay for your reservation at the same time! And if you haven’t checked out our new layout in the downstairs back cropping area, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. You spoke, we listened! You have even more space to store your scrapbooking supplies while you crop!

Scrap-A-Holics Crops – Only two Scrap-A-Holics Friday Crops this month!!! Come in between 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. for fun and prizes. The cost is only $5 and if you spend $25 or more, you get a free crop next time! Advanced reservations and payment are required so call soon to reserve your spot! Don’t get cropped out!!! Famous Last Words

I might be setting a dangerous precedent here, but ask me if I care! Every once in a while, I stumble across a new idea, concept, or place of business that I just have to share with you. Over the years, I have talked about digital cameras, photo software, and different techniques to help you process your pictures. But now it is time for something completely different!

As you read this, a brand new restaurant has opened in our fair city! The Willamette Burger Company (WBC for short) is owned by our very own VIP Janet Henry and her husband Rob. They have partnered up with Sarah (daughter of VIP Mary Lou Fordyce) and husband Nate Crawford and have come up with a delightfully scrumptious taste that you won’t be able to resist!

Let me tell you it is not every day that I rave over a restaurant, and I wouldn’t be doing it now if the only reason was that Janet was the owner. If you love hamburgers, you will really love WBC. The four of us (The Boss, Katina and her husband Marco, and your humble narrator) were invited to dinner shortly before the official opening, and I am telling you, this is no ordinary burger joint. The beef is locally grown, and you can really taste the difference! They don’t use any pre-processed food, and it really does show!!

I could go on and on, but what would be the point? You can’t taste anything by reading about it. So, after you have called us to book your classes and crops, and marked down all our sales events on your calendar, do yourself a favor and get down to WBC for one (or more) hamburgers extraordinaire!!!! Ah, sweet October.  I love the fall and all that it brings…rain, clouds, pumpkins, candy…bring it on!  Now that I have grandchildren, I am really looking forward to the picture-taking opportunities.  We will be visiting the pumpkin patch soon, trips to watch the leaves turning, and then the Halloween costumes. It is certainly a season of change around here also.  We are getting new papers and embellishments for fall, Halloween and even for the holiday season!  I know I hate to say it but the BIG holiday is just around the corner! I hope you can come by soon!

Teacher Appreciation Night – Quick, guess what the most unappreciated profession might be? Too easy to come up with, wasn’t it? Well, not here at Scrapbook Fever! This is our annual special event to help out some of our wonderful teachers! Teacher Appreciation Night will be held Tuesday, October 6^th from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. For every $10 spent (after your 25% Discount!), you get to fill up a bag of stuff from our back tables for FREE!!! We have lots of products that I think will help you in the classroom including cardstock, die cuts, felt pieces and ribbon just to mention a few! Mark your calendars and come by and clean house!!! This sale is open to teachers and school staff alike! Just be sure to bring your (school or district) id with you!

Freaky Friday Sales – Who knows what the boss has in mind? My guess is that, as we go to press, even she doesn’t know! So, how will you ever find out? Well, one way is certain – drop in on Friday October 9^th and on Friday October 16^th and take part in those two Freaky Fridays!!!

Scrap Yard Returns – Never heard of Scrap Yard before? Well, it’s something we do quarterly, and we like to think it’s simple and fun! Everyone has all that stuff at home that you just haven’t gotten around to using, for own reason or another. We all know how that goes! Anyway, Scrap Yard is your big chance to turn those “when will I every use that?” items into someone else’s treasures. Want to pick up some bargains? Well, here’s your chance! Scrap Yard will return on October 17th.

All Day Crop – Join us on Saturday October 24^th for what plans to be a very spooky evening! As usual, you can expect some of your very favorite haunts to be there in addition to prizes and refreshments. A mere $15 for a spooktacular experience!!!

Famous Last Words

Let’s talk about basic portrait composition. You know, a portrait is, of course, what we call a picture whose central object is (usually) a single person who may or may not be taking up most of the picture “real estate.” All too many of us, without thinking about it, aim our cameras so the subject comes up dead center in the middle of the picture. Generally, unless you are trying to make a point, this often ends up being a very boring picture.

So, here’s the tip of the month. Instead of always putting your subject(s) dead center, stick them off to one side, even favoring a corner of the picture (most easily the lower left or lower right – although interesting effects can be had by using the upper two corners). By pushing the main subject off to the side or edge, it leaves room to set the subject in context, making it easier to later identify where the picture was taken, and maybe even give visual cues as to why you took it in the first place. By adding more content, it makes any picture more interesting!

And that’s my last word on the subject!
