October Newsletter!!!!

Shelly Speaks

Ah, sweet October.  I love the fall and all that it brings…rain, clouds, pumpkins, candy…bring it on!  Now that I have grandchildren, I am really looking forward to the picture-taking opportunities.  We will be visiting the pumpkin patch soon, trips to watch the leaves turning, and then the Halloween costumes. It is certainly a season of change around here also.  We are getting new papers and embellishments for fall, Halloween and even for the holiday season!  I know I hate to say it but the BIG holiday is just around the corner! I hope you can come by soon!

Famous Last Words

Let’s talk about basic portrait composition. You know, a portrait is, of course, what we call a picture whose central object is (usually) a single person who may or may not be taking up most of the picture “real estate.” All too many of us, without thinking about it, aim our cameras so the subject comes up dead center in the middle of the picture. Generally, unless you are trying to make a point, this often ends up being a very boring picture.

So, here’s the tip of the month. Instead of always putting your subject(s) dead center, stick them off to one side, even favoring a corner of the picture (most easily the lower left or lower right – although interesting effects can be had by using the upper two corners). By pushing the main subject off to the side or edge, it leaves room to set the subject in context, making it easier to later identify where the picture was taken, and maybe even give visual cues as to why you took it in the first place. By adding more content, it makes any picture more interesting!

And that’s my last word on the subject!

Happy Scrappin’!
