Famous Last Words

Wow! Am I ever glad I took that SLR Class!!!! It helped so much on my recent trip, you have no idea. I just got back from nine days on the bike, and was it ever fun! I had been hoping to make it out to the Black Hills of South Dakota for the past three summers, and each year there was yet another reason I couldn’t go. This year was the year!

I spent a couple nights camping (Shelly never thought I was going to make it) on the way out as well as on the way back. That was so much fun.

The bike held up well – no problems at all, and the journey was almost 4000 miles round trip. Some of the highlights included a great campground 30 miles up a windy road near Boise, camping in Yellowstone (sorry, no bears), Craters of the Moon National Monument, and the very cool pass between TenSleep Wyoming and Buffalo Wyoming over highway 16. Also, Spearfish Canyon near Deadwood was also a lot of fun.

What wasn’t so much fun? Having to drive through almost two hours of rain, hail and lightning on the last part of the trip out. Heading almost due West for most of the return trip. I was pretty sunburned on the face. Oh, and the 116 degree temperature in Mountain Home, hear Boise, on the way back, was something I could have lived without.

It’s not a trip I would ever plan to do again, but it was so worth it to do once! And thanks to the SLR Class, I got to take some super pictures!!!

The nice thing about traveling solo is that you can choose your own pace, so when I felt like taking a picture, I could just stop. The downside of solo travel is there is no one around to take your picture. So, before I left I picked up a little tripod.

My little friend doesn’t take up much room, and allowed me to actually be in some of the pictures.

I was also fortunate to capture an entire sequence of Old Faithful erupting.

I was truly appreciative of everything I learned at the photo class. I think there are still a few openings for upcoming classes. Trust me, your pictures will be ever so much better when you learn a few simple techniques and get yourself out of “auto” mode.

Happy Scrappin’!

Katina Got Hitched and We Got An Award!!!

July 10th, 2009

Stop the Presses!!! This just in!!!!

The boss just received this announcement from the US Commerce Association, which I am happy to quote, as follows:

I am pleased to announce that Scrapbook Fever has been selected for the 2009 Best of Salem Award in the Scrapbook Albums & Supplies category by the US Commerce Association.

Each year, the US Commerce Association (USCA) identifies companies that we believe have achieved exceptional success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Also, a copy of the press release publicizing the selection of Scrapbook Fever has been posted on our website.

Sincerely,

Ashley Carter
Selection Committee Chair
US Commerce Association

Pretty Cool, huh? Take a look at the award itself on our home page!!! It will be in the store soon!

Congratulations to Katina (and you too, Marco)!!!

Yes, the big day has come and gone, leaving a lot of smiling faces and teary eyes in its wake.

The weather held up – not too hot, and no rain – and so did the participants.

As we speak, the happy couple are on the beach of Kihei, Hawaii, relaxing and letting it all sink in.

In the meantime, here’s a link you can click on to take a look at some of the (amateur) wedding photos.

For you photographers in the audience, these were all taken in manual mode on my Canon Rebel XT, and all of the pictures were touched up and cropped using Picasa 3, Google’s terrific free photo editing and management program. The pictures were then uploaded to Picasa’s Web Album site.

Don’t forget our other activities this month, including and especially Scrap Yard!  That’s right!  It’s baaacckkk!  Scrap Yard will be held this month on Friday, July 17th and Saturday July 18th.  There is still time to sign a contract and pick up some labels if you want to sell items at Scrap Yard but the real fun begins Friday, July 17th!  We are anticipating a Super Scrap Yard just based on the number of people who have signed up to sell!  Woo Hoo!

Happy Scrappin!

Bud (aka Mr. Digital)

One of the great benefits of these classes is that if you have taken a series of the classes but want to sit through the classes again, you can (at no additional charge)!  The cost for the series is $40 and you will complete an included mini book that tracks your progress in picture taking and that you can use as a reference guide!  Give us a call to reserve your spot in class!

You can count on me!  I’m goin’!!! That’s right!  I am committed to bring you, and to all my awesome and loyal customers like you, the newest, brightest, & most exciting products to be introduced at CHA SummerRumor has it that I may be the ONLY store in Oregon that is planning on attending our industry’s 2nd largest buying convention of the year!  Ok, I may not be terribly excited about going to Orlando, Florida at the end of July but I am excited to be your eyes and ears for what is happening in our industry!!!  I plan to bring back as many samples of new products that my suitcase can carry!  You can count on Scrapbook Fever!

In the meantime, you may notice a certain “theme” to our schedule for July.  Our theme is “Christmas in July” and we will be featuring our holiday papers and offer holiday-related make n takes and classes all month long!  I don’t know about you, but last December I just didn’t get the true holiday experience with our horrible weather AND I don’t even want to mention how that affected my gift giving!  So, I want to plan early this year and make sure we all get some early holiday cheer!  It’s beginning to look a lot like…well, at least we won’t be caught off guard this year!

Happy Scrappin’ !!!

Famous Last Words

I am no beginner when it comes to photography. I started shooting 35mm Kodachrome a really long time ago, and prided myself on knowing everything there was to know about my high quality Miranda. Back lighting, f-stops, film speed, you name it.

And then I bought a digital camera and the world changed! Wow, AUTO setting! I tell you what, it makes you lazy and sometimes your pictures don’t look like you want them to. So, I jumped at the chance to sit in on our first series of classes on the use of the Digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera.

A new world opens! Now I know what Av and Tv mean, and I learned how to more easily adjust settings when I set the dial to M.

Let me restate – although the class is given by a Canon rep, no one is going to try to sell you anything, and I can guarantee that if you are an amateur photographer like me, especially if you have either no idea or a vague one just what those letters and symbols on your camera may mean, you will benefit greatly from this series of classes.

Just in time, too! After the famous wedding I am taking the bike on a back-roads trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota, including Deadwood, the Badlands and especially Mt. Rushmore. I’ve been looking forward to this trip for three years and now I am totally prepared to take great digital photos too!

We’ll be running this series of classes this summer and also in the fall. Sign up soon! You won’t be sorry!!!

Happy Scrappin’!

June 2009 Newsletter!!!

May 29th, 2009

Shelly Speaks

June. Wow. When I was younger, I had a number of people telling me that as you grow older, time seems to slip by much more quickly. I certainly understand that now. It seems I blink and have lost not an entire week but an entire month! It takes me an entire evening to feed the cats and water my plants! I can’t tell you how many times recently I thought, “Boy, I should have taken some pictures while I was doing that” but the moment is gone and then we move on.

I am really bad about taking pictures. I have a number of digital cameras at my disposal but take pictures on the auto function on each one of them. And I certainly have a lot of reasons to take pictures. My granddaughter seems to change on a daily basis (and so do her parents!). I am so excited that we can offer some classes on the basics of using your digital (or SLR) cameras! Sign me up!!!

We will only be able to accommodate 8 per class (the instructor’s limitation, not ours) so I have scheduled four different class sessions this summer (each session will include 8 hours of class time, two hours a day, concluding with completing a mini book of all the pictures you have taken for class projects) but am planning to schedule more classes this fall.

So, I am making this a personal goal this summer, take MORE pictures and feel better about the quality of pictures I take! I bet you can guess what my goal this fall will be! Scrapbooking!!!

Happy Scrappin’ !!!

Shelly

Kit of the Month

Sorry to disappoint, but there won’t be any Kit of the Month for either June or July. Hey, I have to give her credit, at least she’s still showing up for work! So, I guess it’s the least we can do, to give her a break for a couple of months!

Anyway, to help you get through your KOTM withdrawals, we’ll be stocking the shelf with brand new copies of some of her best kits from the past. Come on in, and check them out. And of course, they’re still on the website at Kit of the Month.

Famous Last Words

It’s rare that La Bossa and I choose the same topic to write about, but here it is. Yes, we’re very excited about Canon coming here to teach us more about our digital cameras. I was an old school 35mm SLR photographer from way back, but I cannot tell you the last time I shot “real film.”

I was pretty skeptical when I first heard about the classes – the last thing I wanted was to have someone come in, and pitch their products to you. I’ve been to too many so-called seminars and classes that did just that. These classes, I assure you, will actually be classes during which you can actually learn more about how to get more out of your camera. The nicest thing is, you won’t be asked to buy anything. I think Canon makes some cool products – I own two of their cameras myself – but you don’t have to own anything Canon in order to benefit.

Besides which, all of us who aren’t professional photographers can use a refresher from time to time. So, if you want a refresher, or you would like to learn how to get your camera out of the auto mode, and make a drastic improvement in your picture-taking, do yourself a favor and sign-up for one of the many sessions we’ll be offering.

If you sign up for the first set of classes, you’ll be sure to see me there. Here’s hoping I see you there too!

May 2009 Newsletter – Happy National Scrapbook Day!!!!!

April 29th, 2009

I know that you may think that May is my favorite month because we celebrate my profession, my craft and our art.  Well, that is certainly one of the reasons!  But I have to tell you that I look forward to May each year because the flowers bloom and it seems that our landscape comes alive with color!  I don’t know about you but blooming flowers and trees just make me happy.  Not to mention how they brighten up those spring pictures that we need to scrapbook!

I am not going to discount just how happy it makes me to celebrate our holiday!  I look forward to the first weekend in May like I used to look forward to Christmas morning when I was young.  I love giving things away!  I can’t help it, it just fills me with joy!  I have had such a good time shopping for our National Scrapbook Day Crop this year and I can’t wait to give our croppers their gift bags and other prizes we have in store for them this weekend!  This is my opportunity to play Santa (or Oprah on a much smaller level!) and it feels so good to share things I love with those of you that love them too!

Happy National Scrapbook Day and the rest of May, my friend!

Famous Last Words

You’ll be glad to know I did more than just survive last weekend’s March for Babies. Katina had been indulging in “friendly persuasion” (aka whining and nagging) trying to get Shelly and me to participate in the 10K walk. Want to know the last time I went on an organized 10K (for us less metrically inclined folks, that’s about six miles) walk?  That would be, um lemme see, never!

So, let’s hear it for the two oldies but goodiesSusan Self and your humble narrator. Yes friends, after all the kiddies dropped out after perhaps 3K (call it two miles and be generous), Susan and I fast-paced the entire route in less than an hour and forty-five minutes. That would be about 10 minutes after Katina and her entourage finished her grueling two mile circuit!

Say Katina, want to have sponsor a situp contest next?

Happy Scrappin’!
